Panel Three: Eternity
It is in our time. There is no reminder of the event except the photo of the lights of those who remain. The field, the track, the barrier, the curve, the make-believe historic marker without names, and the ghost train of a place in time fill the panel. I pieced together the train route from an atlas. The track is highlighted in orange to the approximate location of the tracks the passengers of 1904 used to get to the World’s Fair. The postcards survived all this time…one hundred and twenty years later as of the date of this triptych. Postage stamps now come in many different varieties of designs and are collected for this reason. We now have the forever stamps. The children from the photo of the family enjoying ice cream cones are made into a stamp and a commemorative envelope with the stamp was issued in 1998 to celebrate the ice cream cone made popular in 1904. We now have soft ice cream as a choice, and it is still served in cones. Dr. Pepper is still around with different packaging and a different logo. Hamburgers served on buns are still a favorite food. The road barriers show the recent closing of one of the train crossings near Montserrat for this was not the only tragedy to happen on this stretch of tracks.
